Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Italian sub rolls
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 lb deli-sliced salami
  • 1/2 lb deli-sliced ham
  • 1/2 lb deli-sliced pepperoni thin-sliced preferred
  • 1/2 lb deli-sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 lb deli-sliced provolone cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup roasted red peppers sliced
  • 1/4 cup sliced black olives
  • 1/4 cup banana peppers sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Pastry brush
  • Serrated knife

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Slice the Italian sub rolls in half lengthwise, keeping them hinged at the bottom. Place cut side up on a baking sheet with space between each roll.
  3. Melt the butter and stir in garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper until fully combined. Brush generously over both cut sides of each roll, including the edges.
  4. Layer the salami evenly over the bottom half of each roll, then add a full layer of ham, followed by pepperoni.
  5. Add the mozzarella slices over the pepperoni, then layer the provolone on top. Sprinkle the Parmesan evenly over the provolone.
  6. Scatter the roasted red peppers, black olives, and banana peppers over the cheese layers. Place fresh basil leaves on top.
  7. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and bubbling and the bread is lightly golden. For extra crispiness, broil for 1 to 2 additional minutes at the end.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for one minute. Slice into individual portions with a serrated knife and serve warm.

Notes

Assemble sandwiches up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate before baking. Freeze unbaked assembled sandwiches for up to 3 months — add 8 to 10 minutes to bake time from frozen. Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees F for 8 minutes for best texture.
